Things to Do in Edmonton on a Budget
Things to Do in Edmonton on a Budget
Posted on October 19, 2017
Edmonton began as a small Hudson's Bay Company trading post, but now it's
one of the largest cities in Canada. There are many activities to
do and places to explore in this thriving metropolitan city and the
beautiful natural landscape that surrounds it.
Family fun in Edmonton need not be expensive. Here are eight ways
a family can enjoy Edmonton without losing your shirt. As an added bonus all of
these activities are less than 20 minutes away from our dealership!
1. Experience the
West Edmonton Mall
The West Edmonton Mall has become world-famous and is a popular tourist
destination. One of the largest malls in the world, it offers the visitor an
array of shops, dining, adventure parks, and entertainment. The parks have
fees, and the merchandise, entertainment features, and restaurants make
it tempting to open your wallet. However, it costs nothing to window
shop, people watch, and experience the vastness of this huge complex.
2. Visit the
Alberta Legislature Building
There are free tours of the beautiful Alberta Legislature Building, offered
in both French and English almost every day of the year. Learn from
knowledgeable guides about Alberta's government, political history, and the
architecture of the building.
3. Walk, Run, or
Bike the River Valley Trails
The North Saskatchewan River runs through Edmonton and along it lies a
plethora of trails and parks. It's lovely to spend a few hours or a day
exploring the trails, picnicking, and enjoying nature.
4. Stargaze at the
University of Alberta Observatory
A visit to the University of Alberta Observatory and the opportunity to
view the stars through the powerful telescopes is a wonderful introduction
to astronomy and physics for kids. Viewing hours and tips about proper
attire are on the University of Alberta Department of Physics
Astronomical Observatory website. There's no admission fee!
5. Discover Art at
the Art Gallery of Alberta
There is an admission fee for adults, but for children under age 18 and
anyone with a valid Alberta student ID, the admission is free. This makes it is a very reasonable
and worthwhile family outing.
6. Cool Down at the
Woodlands Water Play Park
On a hot summer day, kids love nothing better than a splash park. Parents
love it too because it's free!
7. Go Tobogganing
People of all ages with a sled or toboggan can enjoy a free winter afternoon
sliding down snowy hillsides maintained by the City of Edmonton.
8. Encourage
Reading at the Edmonton Public Library
A list of free family activities is incomplete without a library. A few
enjoyable hours there can help foster a child's lifelong love of reading. It
doesn’t hurt that we’re located right down Yellowhead Highway once you’ve had
your fill of literature!
