Jeep Renegade vs. Chevrolet Trax

Jeep Renegade vs. Chevrolet Trax

Breaking the mold and doing something Jeep has not done since its inception, creating a new model lineup, the Jeep Renegade targets the fast growing small SUV category. This category has grown to about 2 million units globally and expects to boom to 3 million units by 2020. One of its main competitors in the small SUV category is the Chevrolet Trax.

Looking at the exterior of the two models, both offer fairly classic SUV styles. The Trax however feels more bland. It does not boast any of the Renegade’s eye popping features like oversize lights or wheel arches. The Renegade’s style screams toughness.

With the Trailhawk model, off-roading is where the Jeep Renegade really jumps ahead of the competition. During off road tests it is evident the Renegade was built for trailblazing. Suspension was never an issue and traction going down or uphill was always on point with the Jeep smartly shifting power from one wheel to the others. The Chevrolet Trax lacks significantly in this category. The Trax is aimed more at urban environment than back roads, similar to what we found in our Buick Encore model comparison piece.

Performance wise the Renegade’s higher trim levels are more powerful than the Trax but it are also heavier. The Jeep’s 9 speed automatic transmission has been over hauled and now makes for a smoother and more enjoyable ride. The base model Renegade boasts two powertrains: its own 1.4-liter turbo four, putting out a stronger 160 hp, but mated only to a six-speed manual gearbox. The Chevy Trax has only a single powertrain: a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, making 138 horsepower and paired to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Overall the Jeep Renegade goes far to truly emphasizing the “U” in Sport Utility Vehicle. Both the Trax and the Renegade have received similar ratings and in our opinion are both well positioned in the small SUV category. Where the Renegade shines is in its power, ruggedness and built for off road style.  Get a great deal on a new Jeep Renegade and check out Crosstown Chrysler Jeep Dodge’s new vehicle inventory today.
