Kid-Friendly Activities in the Edmonton Area

Without school and structured endeavors, kids can get stir crazy during the summer months. It's a good thing our metropolitan city offers loads of fun pursuits to keep the whole brood busy. We've put together this list of four family-friendly activities right here in Edmonton, Alberta.

Discover Zero Gravity

Calling kids of all ages to the continent's largest indoor amusement park: Galaxyland, which features 27 thrilling rides, spectacular attractions, and endless play for families — including Zero Gravity. This intense topsy-turvy ride takes passengers upside-down along a wave-form track.

Younger kids delight in the Balloon Race (a slow-moving Ferris wheel) or climb aboard Cosmic Bounce and free-fall several exciting feet. This family-friendly ride is scaled down, so even our youngest guests can join the fun. Find Galaxyland in the West Edmonton Mall, open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., until 9 on Saturdays, and until 6 on Sundays.

Ride the Waves

Grab your swimsuit and ride the waves at World Waterpark. A tropical oasis in the heart of the city, splash in the world's largest indoor wave pool or dare to ride one of the 21 unique water slides and play features.

Discover the park's newest attraction: the Cyclone, a 26-metre-tall water slide that propels riders into a near-vertical 360-degree loop at speeds up to 64 km/h. Adventure seekers are invited to hone their surfing skills by joining the Surf Club and taking lessons or mastering the waves in the FlowRider's Club. Hang 10 Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 to 6 at the mall.

Meet an Elephant

Load up the whole family and head to the Edmonton Valley Zoo. Since 1959, the zoo has been the premier destination for wild encounters. Meet Lucy, the zoo's resident Asian elephant, and more than 350 exotic animals.

Nestled in the heart of the River Valley, Edmonton's zoo is a special place that inspires a love of nature and learning. Its sensational exhibits, such as the new Polar Extremes interactive program, are fun for both kids and parents. Get an up-close peek at seals, sea lions, and adorable arctic foxes. The zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 8 on Tuesdays.

Chat With a Robot

That's right, kids! A visit to Telus World of Science offers the chance to talk with RoboThespian, a real life-size robot. A contemporary learning center run by the Edmonton Space and Science Foundation, Telus invites guests to delight in interactive exhibits and creative play areas such as the largest planetarium theatre in the country and the new Discoveryland Gallery.

Western Canada's first IMAX theatre offers a breathtaking view of dinosaurs and the great barrier reef, among other enchanting films. The center sits on the southwest corner of Coronation Park and is open daily during the summer from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Next time the kids complain that they're bored, head out to enjoy one of our favorite kid-friendly activities in Edmonton. It's also the perfect opportunity to drive your new Jeep or Dodge recently purchased at Crosstown Chrysler Jeep Dodge to one of these destinations. You'll survive the summer — and have fun, too!
